What's so Special about Rolex GMT Master Watches?
The GMT Master series is an iconic professional watch. Developed when Pan Am requested a dual-time watch for their crews and pilots on long-haul flights, the first reference was released in 1955. Since the first reference, the GMT Master went through many design changes and improvements, whilst staying true to the original design ethos, until the final reference was released in 1988 and then discontinued in 1999.
The Rolex GMT Master II was introduced in 1982. The difference between the original Master series and the Master II is that, while both watches can only display two time zones, the GMT II can track three time zone simultaneously. The GMT Master II is still in production, but some references have been discontinued.
Both the GMT Master and the GMT Master II have beautiful and practical designs. With a variety of bracelet options and colours available, plus striking bezel colours, the GMT has an iconic look. Practical and opulent, this watch series is a favourite of collectors and travellers alike.
Popular Rolex GMT Features
Rolex is known for its evolutionary rather than revolutionary improvements, therefore each new reference of the GMT has featured upgrades and tweaks. As you move chronologically through the references, you will see movement upgrades, sleeker profiles and additional bracelet options. From the different colours on the bezel to the metal for the bracelet, you're sure to find a GMT Master or GMT Master II that suits your style.
GMT Bracelet Metals
When it comes to bracelet metal, there are some beautiful options. Some GMT Master references are available in Evergold (Rolex's rose gold), white gold or yellow gold. Evergold GMT Master watches are a stylish choice that has a warmer look. Stainless steel GMT Master watches are durable and versatile. The first reference debuted with Oystersteel, making this a sought-after metal for collectors. For the best of both worlds, two-tone bracelets are made with stainless steel and gold. The current reference can be found in Everose Roslesor, which is the white gold Everose and Oystersteel, this combination is a classic and elegant look for the GMT Master II.
GMT Bezel Colours
The different bezel colours give the GMT Master an iconic style. The bezel allows for easy reading of two time zones at a glance. Simply move the bezel to the correct timezone and then reading the 24-hour hand against the bezel gives you the time of the alternative timezone. Some of the references have options for dual-coloured bezels, which allows the wearer to distinguish between day and night. Many of the dual-coloured bezels have earned themselves popular nicknames.
For instance, the Rolex GMT Batman has a black and blue Cerachom ceramic bezel. This was first released in 2013. Another popular bezel colour combination is the GMT Master Pepsi, which has blue and red and is arguably the most iconic bezel colour combination. These colours were chosen to mimic the brand colours of Pan Am airline and not the soft drink!
Does Rolex GMT Hold Value?
As one of the most popular Rolex models, the Rolex GMT II tends to hold its value. Many of the discontinued references and styles are coveted by collectors, which helps the GMT Master models not only hold value but sometimes increase due to rarity.
